10/04/2016 Howff Glen Affric

Sunday 10 04.  Glen Ness Campsite to Glen Affric.

Spooky Loch Ness

Up and off after re-watering etc.  The Bridge of Allen, by the Calledonian Canal, was reached via a long twisty, though beautiful, single track road, with ‘pockets’ (passing places).

Brief walk about, loo, and gawk at the huge locks and boats travelling through them.   Off to Glen Affric.

Glen Affric is reached via a twisty turny uppy downy single track road requiring diligence and concentration in a vehicle of Hamish’s large (though very elegant) dimensions.

The Forestry Commission of Scotland have maintained an extremely beautiful road nudging the tumbling river Affric, through Caledonian forest with it’s native Scots Pine and Silver Birch and Heather and rarer plants. This ‘Furry Forest’  is stunning and we were very pleased to have decided to spend two nights here.

About 25 minutes in Alastair (driving) was extremely pleased to stop at ‘Dog Falls’ car park for soup lunch and compost loos.  We then took one of the signposted trails through the furry forest for an hours stroll before heading on into the Glen towards the End of the World car park entitled ‘River Affric’.

This Howff rewarded us with spectacular views of the Glen with Loch Affric, furry forest, snow capped mountains and the brief soar of a golden eagle (probably). We meandered around a short rocky route alongside the river before Alastair opted for a short nap (driver fatigue) with underpants on display to the many visitors (about six cars).

By teatime our fellow tourists had headed home and we had the Glen to ourselves.  Bliss.  After tea we walked up to a viewpoint which displayed tomorrow’s walk around the loch below us, as the sun went down.
